Leadership on & off the field: leadership development for the student athlete is an initiative by the Kansas Youth Leadership Academy (KYLA) and is designed to provide Kansas high school student athletes, regardless of sport, with comprehensive leadership training. This program has two objectives: first, to nurture and enhance the leadership behaviors that many young student athletes are beginning to display; and second, to help student athletes transfer these skills from the athletic arena to other areas of their lives. Utilizing leadership experts, coaches, athletic directors, and community leaders from across the country, this specialized curriculum focuses on character development, leadership and teambuilding skills, and citizenship.

 |
The 4th Leadership On and Off the Field conference will be held November 11, 2008 at the Capitol Plaza Hotel in Topeka, KS. In addition to our signature training sessions, this conference will include two dynamic keynote speakers: Candice Whitaker and Richard Dedor.
 |
Candace Whitaker, the head coach of the University of Missouri - Kansas City women's basketball program, Whitaker led her team to The Summit League in 2008, after playing undefeated at home. Prior to her appointment at UMKC, Whitaker spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Valparaiso. Whitaker arrived at Valparaiso after playing at Texas Tech for two seasons. Before playing at Texas Tech, she played two years at Seward County Community College in Liberal, Kan. Whitaker was named an honorable mention National Junior College Athletic Association all-American after she averaged a double-double in assists and points. A prolific playmaker, Whitaker finished her career with more than 830 assists in four years of collegiate basketball.

Richard Dedor, President & CEO of Richard Dedor Communications, Dedor operates his marketing and speaking company, while performing a full-time job for the US Tennis Association. In 2002 when he was just 18, Dedor ran for mayor of Mason City. 'The Time is Now' was the slogan during the campaign, but the message hasn't faded. Richard is a four-time CIML All-Academic Athlete. As a player and as a coach, he was always pushing the players to work harder, think smarter and to be better teammates. Even before college, he was an all-state speaker and the recipient of the Iowa Bar Association's American Citizenship Medal. The goals to lead, achieve, and positively affect the world around him shape each day of his life.

"In the last several years as president of the Kansas Coaches Association, I have had the honor to work with the people that are organizing the Leadership on & off the field conference. In today's world, our young people are faced with many challenges, some good and some bad. We desperately need effective leaders to meet the challenges they will face. This is an excellent program to help develop those young men and women. I highly recommend your support and participation in this important program."

"I strongly encourage school administrators, teachers and coaches to take advantage of this new cutting-edge program. Leadership on and off the field uses value and principle based guidance to develop dynamic leadership skills. As an educator this is your opportunity to be the person who will make life better for young student athletes.”
